I was having my usual dose of Wikipedia articles when I chanced upon the village of Philippine, The Netherlands.

That’s right. This was the first time that I had known of a foreign place also named Philippine. And after further reading and searching for more info, I realized that this Belgian town could have the first claim to the name Philippine.

It was founded in 1506 and named after Philip I of Habsburg. I found a map made in 1868. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the Philippines (country) named Felipinas in 1521 after King Philip II of Spain? That would be 15 years after the European Philippine was established and named.

And wasn’t the Philippines only started to be referred to as Philippines by the Americans? And that would be much later in history.

It is one of the most perplexing phenomena that I have been quite aware of even as a small boy: What are my breasts for?
